Free Art For Free People

Our Goals

Our art giveaway program is intended to pursue the following goals:

  • Encourage all art lovers to support our cause;
  • Give our customers yet another way to familiarize themselves with our art collection;
  • Help out art lovers in need, who adore contemporary art but cannot afford to spend money on pictures and prints;
  • Promote our artists and our gallery;
  • Get maximum feedback from our viewers.

Our Rules

We have an agreement with our artists that besides regular sales we’ll be giving away to the public some of their artworks in digital format. Those images are downloadable for free and must be used for educational and recreational purposes only.

Our Gallery imposes a size limitation rule on the free images, to protect the intellectual property of our artists. According to our rule, the longer side of the image cannot exceed 2000 pixels.

An image of that size is large enough to enjoy the art in fullest on any device. At the same time it is small enough to prevent its unauthorized commercial use.

Downloading Instructions

For performance and security reasons our free art is stored and downloadable outside of our gallery website. You can click on this link to start browsing our free art on Google Photos. Please follow the downloading instructions on Google Photos.

Browsing and Updates

We deliberately keep our free art anonymous, unsorted, and not attributed. If you fell in love with a particular picture, browse our regular gallery inventory to find its full size version and make an order. Or just download the free version and enjoy it as a screensaver on your computer. Our curators are updating our free art pool from time to time, so keep coming back and explore our free inventory.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: There are a lot of online stores and print shops that sell art prints. How your online art gallery is different from all others?

A: We don’t sell cheap posters. We sell high-end digital reproductions of contemporary art. Our artists have their works professionally scanned and send us digital images.  Our print service provider is staffed with  exceptional printing experts and uses state-of the-art machinery.

Q: So, what do you sell exactly, digital prints or real art, that is, the original artworks?

A: It is a very common fallacy that only the original artwork can be called art. A trashy picture painted by a layman is not art, it’s a piece of ruined canvas. On the contrary, a high-end fine art print that exactly matches the original artwork is definitely art and costs more money than a bad painting.

Q: Is it possible at all that the original work and its digital reproduction could look identical? Is there any difference that can be found and tell the original from the copy?

A: The color and tonal gradations and the shapes look identical to the human eye. The only difference that gives away the copy is that the original painting often has texture while a print has smooth surface. Inexperienced art buyers, who don’t know it, often pay top dollars to the scammers, thinking they bought the original piece when in reality it was a giclee print.

Q: I understand that buying prints instead of original art I can save some money or get more art for the same amount. But don’t I lose the energy and the spirit that the artist put into the original work?

A: In a performance art like music the energy and the spirit of the musician is even more important, isn’t it? But you listen to the recorded music ways more often than a live band. Just like CD’s, art prints save you time and money.

Q: Music and any performance art is intended for a crowd. Wouldn’t you agree that a painting has a more private nature? Don’t you think that some people would love to possess something that is absolutely unique, something that nobody else can have?

A: They already have something absolutely unique that nobody else can’t have –  themselves! You, yourself, are unique and you don’t need any token to add more uniqueness to yourself. We also believe that true human nature is built around sharing beauty, not hoarding or hiding it from other people.

Q: What is your ultimate goal in the art market?

A: We want to earn enough money to start a contemporary art museum where we could exhibit original contemporary art and open it up to the people, selling high-end digital reproductions online. We want all living artist to join our cause and earn the main portion of their income selling prints, just like musicians make most of their money selling CD’s.

Q: Do you really think that artists would agree with your idea to turn their unique art into mass production? What will left out of their elitism if their art would be selling left and right like hot dogs?

A: We strongly believe that artists’ elitism is based only on their talent, hard work and high spirit. Music does not become less great and enjoyable and musicians do not become less loved by their fans just because their CD’s are sold left and right like hot dogs. After all, everything is a matter of habits and traditions, which are subject to change.

About Our Gallery

Unlike the majority of online art selling resources that are self-served and work on a subscription basis, we are a curated gallery.

Subscription based art resources have no control over the quality and the price of the artworks that their subscribers put up for sale.

On the contrary, we have long-term relationships with our artists and learn every artwork that they submit to our gallery

As a rule, we only accept artworks in digital format suitable for museum quality fine art prints.

If the original artwork has been created in a medium other that digital, the artist must have it professionally scanned and submit to our gallery the digital copy, not the original.

The selling price of each item consists of the cost of printing and a fixed markup that covers our expenses, including the artist’s royalties. Therefore, the artist’s income depends not on one crazy million-dollar sale but on  a single sale’s royalty amount multiplied by the number of sales.

Our art community is very diverse: we have artists of different ethnicity, faith, gender, upbringing and world outlook.

Our artists work in different genres and styles and use all kinds of media. However, we all strongly believe that fine art must belongs to all the people just like poetry, music, and movies.

We believe that artists should make their wealth by selling digital images of their artworks to millions of viewers just like rock bands sell their songs to millions of listeners.

Our art community is open to all broad-minded artists who have talent, creativity, and unique vision, and who share our belief that art belongs to all people equally, not just to the mean rich dudes who have the money and the nerve to hog a piece of art and not to share it to the world.

The more artists and viewers like you join our cause the sooner we’ll accomplish our mission of bringing art back to the people.

Creating Your Home Art Collection

An art gallery works as a matchmaker between an artwork and the art collector. We don’t want you to be unhappy with your art and we don’t want our art to feel unhappy in your home. In order to keep everyone happy you need to make the right choice, and we’re here to help you.

When you come to an art gallery you, in fact, are going on a date with different artworks, trying to figure out, which one would be the best match for you.

Here are some tips on how to find a good match.

First of all, do not buy a piece of art that thrills you too much. It’s not a thrill that you want every day at your home, it’s rather tranquility and harmony. Just like with a relationship with a person, the most thrilling features that had attracted you to that person so strongly at first, will start to irritate and repel you from that person after a while.

When you come to an art museum and buy a ticket, you book your time and prepare your mind to make the necessary efforts to understand the exhibited art and enjoy the collection. You don’t do it every day, especially with the same picture. Therefore, art intended for home walls is very different from the museum art.

As you know about humans relationships, there are high and low maintenance boyfriends and girlfriends, and fine art is no different. A high maintenance picture is a meaningful piece of art that requires a full dedication in order to reap the benefits of its beauty and some efforts to understand its message. You’d be better off if you leave the high maintenance artworks to fine art museums.

Simply put, when you’re at home looking at your walls, you want your wall pictures to please your eyes instantly and without any efforts. You also want your wall art to please your eyes even if you don’t look at the pictures directly. In other words, the first thing you want from your home art is to pleasantly fill your wall space and create a good ambiance. Let’s see how to achieve that goal.

The big advantage of fine art prints over original art is that prints are made-to-order items and customer can specify the order size that fits the interior the best. As a general rule, if the print is going to be placed above a big piece of furniture like a bed or a couch, it’s width must be no less that half the length of that furniture item. The wall size also matters. A small picture would be suppressed by a large wall space. On the contrary, if the picture is too large it will make the entire room look dwarfy.

Picture is too small for the wall.

Picture is too big for the wall.

We can’t cover the entire topic of creating a home art gallery in one small article, so we have to limit our article to several basic guidelines. Here is the list of the main factors that must be considered when selecting pictures and placing them on your walls:

  • size
  • color scheme
  • style
  • subject
  • texture
  • shape (including the picture frame)
  • location
  • composition

All those factors together will pledge into the final composition of your home gallery.  The composition is the main goal of your design efforts while all the individual factors in the list are the ingredients of the composition you are trying to create.

  • The size of the composition should be proportional to the size of the wall. Your art collection should not be too small to the point of getting lost on the wall and should not be too large to clutter the wall. Remember that in general large artworks are more impressive than small ones.
  • To achieve visual harmony, always keep the shape in mind. Ideally, the dimensions of your art composition should have the same proportions as the wall on which it is placed.
  • In a room with a low ceiling a tall picture on the wall will visually elongate the vertical space and make the room look taller. The same picture will make a tall room with a vaulted ceiling look like a cathedral. On the contrary, a big wide picture will lower the ceiling visually and make the interior look like a home rather than a church.
  • When you place your pictures on the wall, think about your art collection as a single picture and center it on the wall accordingly. Before you actually started hanging the pictures, make an accurate photo of your wall and of your pictures and do some experiments on your laptop. If you don’t have Photoshop, Microsoft Paint would be enough to shuffle pictures around.
  • The center of the composition should be a little lower than the eye level of an average person, that is, about 57” high. If the ceilings are too high or low, apply the three fourth rule. Divide the wall height into 4 equal parts and place the point in the center of the third part, counting from the floor.
  • When hanging a picture above the furniture, try to leave at least eight inches of free space below the picture to avoid the effect of crowded space. However, there might be some exceptions to this rule, depending on the composition.
  • Depending on its dominant color, a picture can become an accent part of the interior or, conversely, pacify an overly energetic environment.
  • The subject of the painting is one of the most important characteristics. It should not only meet the aesthetic requirements of the viewers, but also support the overall style of the interior.
  • The shapes and the framing style of the pictures should work with each other. It is a good idea to plan the framing of your entire collection rather than select a framing option based entirely on the picture itself.
  • The picture and its frame must be compatible with the color pattern and the texture of the surrounding wall space. There are no certain rules for it, that’s why experimenting with software and photographs on the early stage is so important.
  • You might want to keep the content of the pictures away from the close attention most of the time and just let them fill the wall space nicely. In that case you need a number of smaller pictures to make a nice set. It’s up to the viewer to come closer and learn the pictures. If, however, you want the picture to be in a good view most of the time, the distance from the most convenient viewing point must be about twice the size of the larger side of the picture. This distance should be increased for the pictures painted with large brushstrokes that have a mosaic look so that the mosaic elements be small enough to assemble into meaningful objects in the viewer’s eyes.

Below is a couple of popular schemas of home art gallery designs that might help you to design your own collection. Just remember that you don’t have to copy any of those designs. Don’t be afraid to experiment using your computer or just paper and scissors and you’ll be rewarded with a wonderful art gallery of your own unique design.
